Another Week, Another GIF

This week was uninteresting. It was almost entirely bug fixes, minor tweaks, and slacking off but the slow week did free up some brain power to work on updating and adding new store pages for SiC, of course they're still unviewable, but they're fairly complete which goes a long way towards making me feel like I'm developing a game for some sort of real release rather than just to be abandoned on some backwater site that no one uses.

Obviously it still might end up abandoned at the ass end of itch.io or Steam with all the other trashier Greenlight games, but at least it has a chance now.

In any case, I've generated a few more GIF's of SiC's gameplay to serve as placeholders until we're more final (in a month or so).

I'd also like to take this time to officially announce that SiC will finally launch on Itch.io on October 15th, 2016 for the grand price of $2.99 (USD). We should also be launching a Steam Greenlight campaign sometime before that so that we can come to both Itch.io & Steam at the same time, though there's no garantee that we'll make it on time if we make it at all.

In any case, before I go I wanted to put in a little plug here for RocketCat Games's Death Road To Canada, which is a fantastic sort of riff on the Oregon Trail, with a lot of action and survival influences. I like to think of it as the game that The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct should have been. In any case, it's fantastically fun and solidly designed. Give it a shot and stay safe this week.

This'll be a short post. This last week of development was absolutely consumed by animation. I reanimated each enemy, tweaked player animation, generated an intro sequence, and made a host of other tweaks I'm too tired to remember. The intro sequence was an arduous process. The cockpit shot is on screen for about 10 seconds throughout the entire game, which makes it a bit of a downer to admit that I spent about 9 hours on it and will likely be spending more in the future to give it more personal details and a more polished look.

This sequence will trigger whenever a player starts a new game, it's meant just to give you some context on how you got where you are as well as subtly slip some hints about your character's past. Anyway, take a look.

There's still quite some work to be done and some of these assets will certainly be changing before release, but this is the rough sketch of a player's first introduction to the world of SiC.

Sound & Color

I lied, this post is really just about sound, but it is colorful sound, so that's almost as good. Originally I'd been planning to just get an upbeat electronic soundtrack for SiC, but then one of the two musicians who're working on SiC decided to take things a little differently. If you've been following me on Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat you've probably heard a little of it here or there, but I wanted to sort of syndicate some of it. The plan here is to steal traffic from Mike's page on SoundCloud for personal gain.

Anyway, the first song we're gonna flaunt is Where'd the Party Go?  Which has sort of a slower guitar build to a snappy electronic beat. That was a set of musical words that I only vaguely understand.

Friendly Mischief  is the next spotlight we're gonna shine here. This one has a far more driving guitar & drum sound. I really dig this one.

For our final spotlight this week, we have Uncertainty's Theme. This one starts off a little slow, but kicks off fantastically a bit in. It's pretty cool.
If you liked any of these songs, you should definitely take a look further into Mike's SoundCloud page or his Twitter feed it's got some good stuff in there.

Anyway, if you're in the mood for a little shooter demo, I stumbled across a game this last week called Reclaim Earth. It's clearly unfinished, but god dammit I can't resist those downrezed graphics. Anyway, it's a short lil' thing, maybe 25 minutes if you go slow, but Ansity Games is working on building it out into something more, and personally I'm kinda looking forward to the finished product.

Another super short one here. Really I just wanted to consolidate a few of the newer animations SiC is getting. In light of not being able to secure an artist, I've made the executive decision to bravely go where I should never go. . . into the art world. I'm going to do my absolute best to get the best systems I can devise in place for animation/graphics, and if I still don't have someone reliable to do art, then I'm going to do it myself. So for now, here are a few of the newer animations.

First is the newest addition. It's little more than adding a simple alpha fade to the pickup information blips. Nothing gameplay altering, just makes the effect less jarring to see.

Next is the new walking animation. Compared to the stiff clicking legs of earlier animations, this looks significantly more fluid and natural.

For the final animation update, something both loud and subtle. This is just a quick GIF of the screen-shake, recoil, and weapon warping effects. Screen shake is pretty standard in shooters of all varieties, as is recoil, but there's another effect in this last GIF that I felt clever for including. The weapon actually resizes every time a new bullet is fired. This may go completely unnoticed, but I felt that it, in a quiet way, lent each bullet that much more punch when fired.

I've remarked several times on Twitter that animation and graphics are incredibly boring to me about 95% of the time, so as someone who avoids it at most all costs, I felt very proud of the couple of new tricks I've integrated into the game.

Lovin' this whole thing. Like, almost all of it.

I posted an offhand joke/observation about a couple youtubers I like. One of them retweeted it and my twitter has been blowing up for the last hour strait. I've hit the peak.
