New things!! In a new push to make Doomer look less shitty, I've spent a few hours the last few days implementing a simple blob shadow system to add some depth to the look of things. The walls are still totally awful, but they should be getting tweaked soon. 

Anyway, for now I really just wanted to showcase the shadow system, it's still a bit buggy, but it's getting better all the time.

Not a huge update, but something that's been needed for a while. 

In other news, new names are still being mulled over, I don't honestly think we're gonna be settling on anything until closer to release, for now it'll stay Doomer.

Weeks

Well, it's been a while. Pretty much two weeks actually, in that time things have certainly been moving, for better or for worse. I've got the layouts for the first 10 levels, added a few new weapons, implemented about 8 Million fixes for minor bugs, and restuctured how all the menus work. 

I'll be posting a few times this weekend, hopefully with some good GIFs or images, but for now, I wanted to make sure I got a quick little update out.

The game is moving along. Through all the other junk and changes, the game marches on.

Burn Baby Burn

So! The last post I wrote was pre-being a university student. This post is while being a university student. Things are slightly different. I have met some cool people, ridden a bus, and have legitimate classes. 

However you're not here for me, you're here for updates on the top down view of gory halls full of bullets and corpses. In that respect. I do have something to share. Having finally implemented a tagging system for bullets, I can now apply new specific attributes and effects easily and cleanly. So of course the first thing I did was make a Fire Baller, a gun that fires big ass fireballs.

It's not a major addition, nor is it something insanely cool. I just think fireballs are super cool. I mean, it's also is justified in the game lore, but, you know, either way, fireballs are cool.

Short post, but fret not, more is coming.

Or maybe you should fret.

I guess it's all about perspective.

The Next Week

So, this week I'm moving into a new city, and starting up classes at University of Alaska Fairbanks. This is a step for me as a person and likely as a developer too. After taking a year or so off of school, and cramming that year with as many things as I could fit, I'm finally taking the next step. 

Now, I don't know how much this will affect Doomer or the games I make in general. I assume I'll still have time to work and update Doomer, and hell, going for a computer science degree should teach me a thing or two tha'll be usefull in the further development of my stuff.

All that to say, for the few people who keep up with me and the stuff I do, things may be changing a bit in the coming weeks. I'm going to be doing my best to keep on schedule, and doing what I can to recruit an artist with some vision. 

I'll do my absolute best to keep you all posted on how things are moving along, and do my best to keep working on Doomer until it's done.

Also, here's a GIF of showers working in game. I've spent the last few hours essentially building nonsense interactions that players can do with the world of Doomer. They won't make any significant impact on the world, rather they'll just be little details that players can interact with.

Where to go . . .

I've been in a bit of a crisis these last few days. I'd been working on a video production project for a week or so, which had essentially stopped Doomer development, but now that that's essentially wrapped, I'd hit a wall. 

Finally sitting back down in front of my source code and trying to pluck away and get back into the groove of game development, I had a block. I couldn't think, I couldn't write anything, I just couldn't make things click. I decided to take a few days just to chill. I played The Quest(which you should totally check out) and hung out with friends. In the end, it was a good time, but I felt the gnawing codependency on creation gnawing at the back of my mind. Yesterday, I sat back down after my short hiatus. Still stuck. 

​The wall continued on through this morning. I didn't even open Doomer when I got up this morning. Instead I booted up one of my favorite kill-a-few-minutes game Eldritch and blasted away some obtuse, otherworldly creatures. Something snapped. Ideas began to flood in and I wrote, like, 9 sticky notes with new enemies, weapons, areas, characters and food items. It was amazing. Like a brain orgasm. A BrainGasm.

Ok, so that was way too much talking to explain how things have been going this last week. In the end, the first thing I did after finally dying in Eldritch, was to pop over to Doomer and implement some lore related effect. 

The first, and I think best, is the relationship between the captured allies and the enemies, the Collected. Now, on Tuatha Station there were a lot of security personnel (Good security personnel? That remains to be seen) many of which were killed when the station was taken, some were trapped or captured by the invaders. These remaining personnel can be rescued by the player. BUT! These captured innocents aren't bulletproof.

Of course there garden variety bullets, simple, effective, but blood gets absolutely everywhere, but if you're an evil spaceman who's trying to kill our hero, maybe you want something else? Something a little more devious? Something a little, evil? Like converting a poor security guard into a space monstrosity from another dimension?!

So that's what I've been working on today. Pretty cool? Pretty lame? I dunno, really depend on how you look at it I guess.

In other news, I'm moving Doomer from a prototype to being an alpha! What does that mean? Not alot! It really just means that I'm now looking to expand the pool of testers and I'm starting a search for someone to make it not look awful (it looks pretty awful right now... right?)
